The satsuma orange is easy-peeling and contains no seed, it is a Japanese citrus mutant introduced to the West. It is also termed as unshu milkan or usually milkan in Japan. It is named as Wenzhou migan in China, this means as “honey citrus of Chinese”. These oranges' sizes are same as other mandarin oranges, which are generally smaller than an ordinary orange, and are very sweet.  In comparison to other citrus fruits, Satsuma can be easily peeled off, as it carry different features of distinctive thin and large and foremost oil glands with dotted leathery skin. The Satsuma is fresh and delicate flesh, which makes it delicate for handling. It is often categorized as hit-and-miss citrus fruit by many citrus growers.

The Satsuma oranges came from Japan. The city of Wenzhou in Zhejiang province is known for the production of citrus fruits and also for the production of Satsuma. The main centre for growing Satsuma in Wenzhou is wushan, which falls in the Ouhai District. The cultivators of Japan origin being introduced of Wenzhou in the year 1916, now own orchards in this place.

Mandarin Orange Tree

Jesuits brought this fruit to New Spain from Asia. Jesuits started groves in Louisana, plaquemines Parish in the 18th century are still present. In United states, during the meiji period in the year 1876, Satsuma oranges were brought by a member of US embassy. After this fruit, the towns of Alabama, Florida, Satsuma, Louisiana, and Texas got their name. in the year 1920, Jackson Country was known as “Satsuma Capital of the world” in the region of Florida Panhandle. It is mainly grown in cold locations, because of the reasons that the fruit gets more sweetened in cold weather, and it gets cold-hardiness. For a duration of few hours, the matured Satsuma tree can withstand down to 15 deg F (-9.5 deg Cel.). they are very popular among people, even because they rarely bear any horns on them. There are several ways in which Satsuma oranges can be planted. The first method is of growing them from seeds. This method takes around 8 years for the production of first fruits. The other method is grafting. In this the plant is grafted onto the rootstocks of other citrus fruits. The most popular among them is Trifoliate orange. These fruits bear a great taste, and many people like them. They have low sugar levels making them fit for all.
